At that time, a farmer was hoeing his rice field and found a large stone which turned out to be part of a buried temple. This temple was built in the 9th century, during the reign of King Rakai Garung from the Ancient Mataram Kingdom. What's interesting about Sambisari Temple is that it is located about 6.5 meters below the surface of the surrounding land. This is because this temple was buried by volcanic material from the eruption of Mount Merapi. Look at the reliefs and statues in this temple. Inside the main temple, we can find the phallus and yoni which are symbols of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Apart from that, there are also three ancillary temples that surround the main temple. Sambisari Temple is also surrounded by beautiful gardens, making this place very comfortable to explore.
