Hiking the Devil's Race Track Trail, Wade Mountain Nature Preserve, Alabama

The Devil's Race Track trail is an interesting and easy to moderate hike in the Wade Mountain Nature Preserve, a Land Trust of North Alabama property just north of Huntsville, Alabama. The main trail is 3.4 miles (5.5 km) out-and-back, but I hiked an additional 3/4 miles (1.2 km) of side trails as well. I solo hiked this trail on a relatively cool late-summer morning starting at the Spragins Hollow trail head. This trail is a nostalgic one for me since I used to hike it with my boys when they were little and now they are off doing their own things. There are a number of trails in the Wade Mountain Preserve, but the Devil's Race Track is my favorite. Most of it is a nice walk in the woods, but if you keep your eyes open, you can find interesting flowers and mushrooms along the way as well as rock formations. The "race track" itself is a fascinating ring around the top fo the mountain where there are few trees (it is obvious why it is called a "race track" once you see it--circular, pretty flat, and mostly open). The mountain's geology influences the areas microclimate which in places is semi-arid despite being just down the road from much wetter places like Monte Sano. On the north side of the Devil's Race Track there are sweeping views into Tennessee on a clear day. To extend my hike, I took a side trail over to the "rock wall". The rock wall is a man-made wall on the side of the mountain that is, to me at least, of mysterious origin. I've been able to find very little information about it, but it seems most likely that it dates to the Civil War period (1860's) though I can't confirm that.
