Chopper place

Teaching place with Chopper! This is Chopper’s second session learning place, which will ultimately mean get on your bed, lay down, and stay. Place will provide structure for Chopper within the house and will help with his impulse control. Because this is only his second session around a place board, I’m not using the word place yet instead I’m just rewarding his interest in the board to start. When he takes a step off the board, I’m using leash pressure as well as my spatial pressure to put him back on. Since Chopper’s motivation is high and he’s pretty intelligent, I can start proofing his staying on the board quickly. My movement around him, leash pressure towards me, and showing him food are all things that make him want to get off and give me an opportunity to teach him by putting him back and rewarding his decisions to stay. These are all things people will do either intentionally or not around him on place in the future so are a necessary part of the learning process. In the next session I’ll start expecting a down on place instead of his sit for added calmness with increased duration as the next expectation. Eventually we’ll also overlay this with low level remote collar pressure so that we can ditch the leash and still maintain communication! Chopper is a really fun dog to work and picks things up really fast!
