Receiving a certified letter from the IRS can be a frightening experience for many taxpayers. Although these letters rarely bring welcome news, they shouldn’t be cause for panic. Just be sure to read them carefully, because ignoring them can lead to severe, and often avoidable, consequences. There are many types of letters that the IRS will send via certified mail. I’ll touch briefly on a few of the more important collections letters. After a tax liability is assessed, the IRS will send a Notice and Demand for Payment. This is important because it notifies you that you have a tax liability, and it starts the collection process. If you don’t pay the balance in full, the IRS may file a lien against all of your assets, offset your tax refunds, and take more aggressive enforcement actions if the debt remains unresolved. A Notice of Federal Tax Lien informs you that the IRS has filed a lien against your assets. The lien is a public record which can affect your credit as well as your ability to sell or transfer assets. This letter provides instructions on how to appeal the lien. An Intent to Levy Notice or a Final Notice of Intent to Levy is very serious because it warns you that continued failure to act can result in levies. A levy is when the IRS actually takes things from you in order to satisfy your tax debt. If you fail to take appropriate action, the IRS may levy your bank or other financial institution accounts, garnish your wages, and seize your assets. The IRS may also levy the accounts receivable of a business. With very few exceptions, our tax attorneys can prevent these aggressive enforcement actions, so contact us right away if you’ve received one of these notices. No matter what type of certified letter you received, it’s always a good idea to consult with a tax relief professional if you owe taxes that you cannot pay. Our caring and knowledgeable professionals can answer your questions, explain how to avoid enforcement, and determine whether you qualify for money saving tax relief programs. The call is free, and there is no obligation, so pick up the phone and give us a call. https://taxfortress.com
