Maria Kennedy: Foraged Fruit and the Shaping of Contemporary Tree Cultures Presentation Summary: All cultivated apple varieties are the product of careful human selection and horticultural propagation. Aside from intentional breeding projects, many of these selections begin with the discovery of a wilding apple of particularly useful quality. With the technologies of plant breeding so far advanced, what is the worth of a wilding apple? Drawing on fieldwork in New England and the work of colleagues in Cornwall, Dr. Kennedy will explore the impact of a renewed interest in wild, foraged, and feral fruits amongst contemporary cider makers and growers. Iva Bedenko: Nature based solutions and urban orchards in Zagreb It is well known that due to climate change and loss of biodiversity, cities around the world are reaching for green and nature-based solutions. Parks, forests, urban gardens and orchards are being planted in the cities to alleviate the effects of climate change. Public orchards are extremely important for the greening of cities and they contribute to reducing the effect of heat islands in increasingly overheated cities. These interventions are much more successful if they are designed in a cooperative process.
