On April 10, 2025 the great American novel, The Great Gatsby will be one hundred years old. In celebration, the University of South Carolina Irvin Department of Rare Books & Special Collections has crafted an exhibit with items ranging from first editions of the novel, editions owned by writers like Sylvia Plath, and ephemera from Fitzgerald's life. Join us as we dive into the collection, the importance of The Great Gatsby to the collective cultural conversation, and the importance of public exhibits like this. Dr. Michael Wesienburg, Director of the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, speaks on the curation of the exhibit from the library’s holdings (most of which came from the Matthew J. & Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald) and the hopes for the exhibit. Elizabeth Sudduth, Associate Dean for Special Collections, explores the history of the collection and Fitzgerald's connection to USC through the late Dr. Bruccoli. And undergraduate student assistant, Rachel Longing discusses her experience working with the Gatsby collection and a few of her favorite pieces from the collection. The collection will be on display at the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library in the Thomas Cooper Library on USC's Columbia Campus until July 15, 2025. The collection is free and open to the public. Additionally, many materials from the The Matthew J. & Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald are available online here: https://sc.edu/about/offices_and_divi... #thegreatgatsby #universityofsouthcarolina
