Carbfix – An Earth101 short

Trees and vegetation not only bind carbon from the atmosphere. Huge quantities of carbon are naturally stored in rocks. Carbfix imitates and accelerates natural processes, in which carbon dioxide is dissolved in water and interacts with reactive rock formations to form stable minerals providing a permanent and safe carbon sink. Carbfix dissolves CO2 in water, injects it into the subsurface and turns it into stone in less than two years through proprietary technology. For the Carbfix technology to work, one needs three things: favourable rocks, water, and a source of carbon dioxide. Here one of the directors of Carbix, research professor Sigurður Reynir Gíslason, tells us about the project. Sigurður Reynir Gíslason is a research professor at the University of Iceland's Institute of Earth Sciences. He received his PhD in geochemistry from the Johns Hopkins University in 1985, under the supervision of Hans P. Eugster. His research group has focused on field and laboratory experiments related to mineral storage of CO2 in basaltic rocks as well as the chemical and physical erosion rates of basaltic terrains and their role in the global carbon cycle and has also contributed to the understanding of the environmental impact of volcanic eruptions. He is the past president (2019-2020) of the European Association of Geochemistry, and the co-founder of Carbfix, and currently one of the three directors of Carbfix-consortium focusing on carbon capture and mineral storage. In 2012 he published a book in Icelandic on the global carbon cycle and over his carrier has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed international journals.
