I have been teaching and tutoring math for forty years at every level from elementary school math through precalculus. I have a math credential in California. I’ve taught in public schools, private schools and junior college. I have also had an SAT prep business where I taught large classes (up to 30 students), small groups and one-to-one tutoring. I grew up in NYC, went to law school at Northeastern University and moved to California shortly after I graduated from law school. I passed the bar exam in California but never practiced law. I found that my passion was working with young students in math and test prep. Two areas that I found critical in success in math through high school were number sense and problem solving. To develop number sense I created many mental math activities and worked with students at all grade levels with these activities. I also presented mental math workshops at large teacher conferences in California. Students find these exercises fun and effective in increasing their understanding of math and enjoyment of math. Understanding, enjoyment and confidence are all tied together. Understanding numbers is critical to success in math through high school. I also have a lot of interesting and fun problem solving materials to work with students at all grade levels. I believe that one thing it takes to be a successful teacher is enthusiasm for your subject and for teaching. My style is energetic, enthusiastic and fun. If I’m working one-on-one with a student I try to teach in a way that is most effective for that student, to challenge them in an appropriate manner and to help them be successful and gain confidence. Students learn in different ways and at different speeds and it’s important for a tutor to be flexible in his or her approach. When working with students to prepare for the SAT I find that two things in particular can make the math section challenging for them. One is not remembering concepts in subjects they may have learned a few years back. The main reason they have trouble with those concepts is that they didn’t learn them well in the first place. Many students rely on memorization, which does not last. I try to help them to understand these concepts in a way that makes sense to them so they don’t need to rely on memorization. The other thing that gives students trouble on the SAT is problem solving. Many students have either not learned problem solving techniques or it’s been so long that they forgot them. Even though I’ve taught for so many years I still find teaching fun and creative. I find myself teaching in new and different ways. Since the beginning of the pandemic I’ve been working with students on zoom with the use of a writing tablet. Though I’d prefer to be working in person this has been working well. And of course it has the advantage of being able to work with students throughout the country and in foreign countries as well.
