This video demonstrates the splitting of 260cm-long Makino bamboo culms. When beggining to learn how to split long bamboo culms, keep your hands away from the slit to avoid getting clamped and injured. When splitting longer or larger culms, it is recommended to use a bigger hatchet and a "bridge" - a piece of bamboo with the same length of the blade. Smaller hatchet such as the Japanese ones require twists when cutting through nodes, and could cause arthritis in your wrist after intense use. It is easier to slice the bamboo strips with a bigger hatchet and a bridge than with a smaller knife with thinner blade. Bigger hatchet has a wider belly of blade to support the bamboo strip, so the slices will also be smoother with even thickness. Support longer bamboo culms and strips with a bench to keep them steady and distribute the weight on your arms and wrists. The "bamboo splitter" is another way to split with less effort, but is not recommended as it leaves behind more excess bamboo. For instance, when splitting a bamboo culm with a circumference of 210mm for strips with a 6mm width, a hatchet gives you 2 halfes measuring 105mm, each splitting into 17 strips and an excess measuring 3mm in width (and 6mm in total); while a quarter splitter gives you 4 quarters measuring 52.5, each splitting into 8 strips and an excess measuring 4.5mm in width (and 18mm in total).
