On this episode of Project Dumpster Fire, I attempt to revive a rusty set of $100 Cragar S/S wheels to improve the appearance of the 1973 Plymouth Road Runner affectionately named, "Dumpster Fire" that I plan on taking to The #NoNameNationals in Sikeston, Missouri on September 30th and October 1st, 2022. I bought a pair of rusted 15x10 unilug Cragars with flaking chrome for $50, and a set of rusty 4 -14" Cragars that also had the chrome flaking off for $50 for a total of $100 for 6 rusty and flaking Cragar S/S wheels. I figured this would be a great way to show how to restore rusty Cragars for really cheap. To accomplish the end result that I was after I used a combination of Meguiar's Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner, no. 000 extra fine grade steel wool, and Loctite Naval Jelly Rust Dissolver. After all was said and done, the wheels did end up looking a lot better. My experience on learning how to make ratty Cragar S/S wheels a little less ratty was a success, and ended up complimenting my ratty Road Runner very well. Here are the steps I took to make the ratty Cragars less ratty: Step 1: Rinse off the Cragars with water. Step 2: Spray Meguiar's Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner onto wheels. Let product sit for no more than 15 seconds, then rinse thoroughly. Step 3: While keeping the wheels wet, rub rusty areas with extra fine grade no. 000 steel wool to knock down the less significant rust. Step 4: Coat the wheels with Loctite's Naval Jelly Rust Dissolver. Let the product sit for 15 minutes, and then gave the wheels a thorough rinse. The result was a "fully rustored" set of $100 Cragar S/S chrome unilug wheels to help achieve the weathered period correct look that I was after with my ratty Mopar muscle car. The journey to Sikeston and the #NoNameNationals is well underway now with more parts on the way, and many more tasks to complete! Stay tuned, and enjoy! NO MOPAR LEFT BEHIND!
