Lucas is a fifth-generation coffee producer whose earliest memories are of playing around the coffee trees of his family’s coffee farm in the Espirito Santo region of Brazil. While he pursued a degree in civil engineering, he remained involved with the farm and was always thinking about ways he could improve their processes. After some time working in the construction industry, he joined the family business full time in 2017. Today, Lucas is the commercial director of Café Fazenda Venturim, his family’s coffee business, which specializes in fine Robusta coffees. He’s on a mission to change the narrative around Robusta by educating coffee roasters, baristas, and coffee lovers about its unique flavor profile. Lucas firmly believes that highlighting Robusta's distinct value can lead to a more environmentally friendly, socially equitable, and economically viable coffee industry. Uncover the story behind the Venturim family’s long legacy in the coffee industry, one that’s spanned almost 150 years, and the lessons he’s learned from the generations before him—including why focusing on quality is the only way to weather the inevitable challenges. Discover how his background in engineering has fueled his innovative approach to coffee production—and why he’s experimenting with different approaches to harvesting, processing, roasting, and brewing in order to change attitudes about Robusta coffee. Tune in to hear why Lucas believes economic sustainability is crucial for the future of coffee and how his efforts to include Coffea canephora growers in the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) are a key part of this vision.
