What does it mean to balance your blood sugar? It doesn’t matter what “diet” or lifestyle you may be following, whether it’s keto, paleo, vegan….The simplest way to reduce your blood sugar levels - eat more whole foods, less processed foods. But there are people who have insulin resistance and high blood sugar, but they might not even be consuming large amounts of carbohydrates. So what’s going on? Our bodies need glucose, it’s a primary fuel for our tissues. But where does glucose come from? Is it just from our food? No! There’s actually 4 hormones that can raise glucose levels, too - cortisol, glucagon, epinephrine, and growth hormone. Excessive cell stress (cell danger response) can also cause high fasting blood glucose levels. When you go for a glucose blood draw, the best time is in the morning in a fasted, non-dehydrated state. Additional tests you should have at the same time are hemoglobin A1C, insulin, and C-peptide.
