We headed into the Eagle Mountains of Joshua Tree National Park for a three-day backcountry expedition, part training trip for Isle Royale, part investigation into reports of a mysterious figure said to move along the ridgelines at dusk. Starting from Cottonwood Spring, we established two basecamps, navigated desert washes, climbed toward Mastodon Peak, and explored the historic Mastodon gold mine. Along the way, we tested our backpack camping systems in sustained rain, adjusted gear under real backcountry conditions, and documented tracks in the wash that gave us pause. Was it evidence of the Ridgewalker? Or just the desert doing what the desert does best, playing with light, shadow, and perception? This trip wasn’t just about chasing a legend. It was about preparation, learning, and pushing beyond our comfort zone as a family. Three days. Two basecamps. One storm. And as always... it was epic.
