Completed in 1903, it was the longest suspension bridge span in the world until 1924. Originally, the Williamsburg Bridge was used mainly by trolley lines and railways (see § Rail tracks).[25] In January 1932, it was agreed to convert a pair of abandoned trolley tracks on the south side of the bridge that had been deemed unsafe[26] to an 18-foot-wide (5.5 m) roadway.[27] Three more concrete roadways were added in 1941 as part of a Works Progress Administration project.
