Dredged mud from a harbour on the south coast is being repurposed to help restore eroding saltmarshes in a project designed to safeguard both local wildlife and the economy. The pilot project at Lymington Harbour in Hampshire involves depositing sediment at a level that allows plants to naturally re-establish themselves. Lymington Harbour, which offers ferry services to the Isle of Wight, features 1,600 leisure moorings and attracts around 20,000 visiting yachts annually, contributing tens of millions of pounds to the local economy. However, the harbour's saltmarshes have been eroding at a rate of two to three metres per year due to rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events linked to climate change. ------ "This project is a really powerful example of how we can deliver multiple benefits for people and for nature." The saltmarshes at Lymington on the South Coast of England have reduced by 85% over the last 100 years. As a natural line of defence for Lymington’s bustling harbour against rising sea levels and storms, and home to a diverse range of wildlife including ground-nesting birds, restoring the saltmarshes is critical. An innovative new project to do just this is underway and it has the potential to be a huge moment for the UK’s coastlines 🤞 Lymington Yacht Haven is proud to be working with Lymington Harbour Commissioners, The Crown Estate, Land and Water Group and other groups in the project.
