(6 Jan 2014) Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, former football players and hundreds of fans attended the funeral mass in honour of football star Eusebio on Monday at the Church of Seminario in Lisbon. The director of the Portuguese Football Federation and former Benfica's player Humberto Coelho said "Eusebio has died but what he did will never die." The coffin was later taken to the Lumiar's Cemetery, where thousands welcomed him - under a heavy rain - chanting "Eusebio" and clapping. Benfica former player, Rui Costa and player Oscar Cardozo dropped a Benfica flag on the coffin after it was lowered into the grave. Eusebio, was born into poverty in Africa but became an international sporting icon and was voted one of the 10 best players of all time. He was an international star and national hero whose heyday was in the 1960s with Benfica and the Portuguese national team. He died at home of heart failure on Sunday at 0330 GMT. He was 71. The Portuguese government decreed three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast. The Portuguese Football Federation ordered a minute's silence ahead of Sunday's Portuguese Cup games. Eusebio is survived by his wife, Flora, two daughters and several grandchildren. Authorities said they would consider moving him later to Lisbon's National Pantheon, which contains the tombs of illustrious figures from Portuguese history.
