Second test flight on 9 September 2012 by Graham Hewitt of his Pietenpol Air Camper at Jandakot airport WA. First flight had very excessive nose down pitch forces which could not be trimmed out. After adjustment of tail plane pitch, this flight still could not trim out nose down pitch forces, but stick forces were much less. After further adjustment, she was flown to the Sport Aircraft Builders Association airfield at Serpentine to continue the test program. Aircraft more suitable to grass, so landed alongside paved runway. This was taken as a being clear of the runway by a departing aircraft, which elected to take off, which caused minor concern. No harm done. This aircraft is a slightly modernised version of the Air Camper, in that it has a long nose to accomadate an aero engine instead of a converted car engine. In this case, a Continental O200 is fitted, along with a pull operated electric starter for convenience. The long nose allows for a slightly more substantial amount of fuel to be carried than the traditional wing centre section tank. Getting in and out of an Air Camper is a challange even for the young, with Graham being in his eighties, he has cleverly stored a boarding ladder in the wing centre section baggage locker. This has a rope on it so he can raise and lower it to the ground, as needed. Go Graham!
