...Source: https://insideevs.com/news/764002/lge... Transcript: Per InsideEVs, LG Energy Solution has just completed a $1.4 billion expansion of its battery plant in Holland, Michigan — the first lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery facility in the U.S. The plant will initially focus on producing batteries for energy storage systems, but there’s a big takeaway for electric vehicles too. LFP batteries are generally cheaper to make, safer due to better thermal stability, and don’t rely on rare earth materials. They’re widely used in China, powering over 80% of electric vehicles there, and now companies like LG Energy Solution and Ford are bringing that tech stateside. While LG’s current shift is targeting home and grid energy storage, the tech and manufacturing tools are nearly identical to what’s used in EV batteries, opening the door for future vehicle applications. With EV sales growth uncertain and federal incentives under pressure, this move allows LG to keep its U.S. factories busy while staying ready if the EV market rebounds. And Ford’s own plans to produce LFP batteries in Michigan using CATL’s tech suggest more U.S.-made affordable EVs could be on the way.
