The Biloxi Lighthouse was constructed in 1848. It was the 2nd in the US & the 1st on the Gulf Coast to be made from cast iron (with a brick interior). It was modernized in 1939. Prior to that, only 6 people where Lighthouse keepers; 3 of which were women. Those three women, collectively maintained it the longest at 74 of the 91 maintained years. Over the years, many hurricanes battered the structure with significant damage to it in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina. It took $400,00 and 14 months of work to repair it to its former glory. Tours are offered daily from 9am to 10am for $5 for adults & $2 for children. Wristbands can be purchased across the street at the Biloxi Tourist Office on Hwy90.
