Thank you Jesse Larson… as result of your time as a contestant on Season 12 of the Voice, I was blessed to play so much amazing music with you. Jungle Love, Let’s Go Crazy, Shining Star and I Wish immediately spring to mind. Unfortunately, I was not able to shoot “drum cams” for those tunes, however, I did grab this performance of Sir Duke. The Voice has been an incredible experience for me because it has not only exposed me to new music that I might not have otherwise heard of, but also because it has allowed me the opportunity to perform so many iconic tunes that I’ve enjoyed over the timeline of my life. November 29, 1980… Stevie Wonder was the first live concert I ever attended. I was 8 years old, and saw him with my parents at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s an overused term, but I would definitely say, I was blown away. NOBODY in the the place sat down during the entire 2 plus hours, and Stevie was on fire! Getting to play songs like this on The Voice often connects me with meaningful memories and events that impacted my development not only as a musician but also as a person, so, thank you Jesse Larson for sparking my revisitation of that moment in my life. As for the drumming… more of the same here. By this point, I’ve posted videos that have illustrated the 3 licks I know again and again, but I’m glad that still seem to have apparent value. Speaking of “licks”, before anyone asks, I honestly don’t know what happened at 1:55. LOL… I can’t tell what I played, and I’m not sure if it’s what I meant to play or not. Usually, when I make a mistake, I pull a silly mug, but I didn’t do that, so that leads me to believe that what happened was somewhat intentional… that said, I can’t really tell how many notes or what sticking pattern it was… but I did manage to catch the accent on the ‘e’ of 4… so I guess, “no harm, no foul”. haha… As always, thank you for watching these videos… it continues to be a pleasure getting to share behind the scenes views, musical insights and random stories. facebook.com/natemortondrums Instagram @n8drumz.
