Thirubuvanam is very near to Kumbakonam Town. The Presiding Deity who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva is known as Sri Kampaheswarar or Sarabeshwarar. The Presiding Deity is a Swayambumurthy here. Sarabeswarar stands 7 feet tall in this Temple. It is believed that in ancient times there was a King who had an ailment of Trembling or Quaking hands and as soon as he prayed before the Deity here his ailment was cured and he became fit again. Hence Kampaheswarar is known as Nadukkam Theertha Nayagan here. So many say that anyone praying to Kampaheswarar would be relieved of their Neurological disorders. It is said that between 1176 to 1218 AD King Kulothungan Cholan 3 built this Temple. The Temple's Vimanam is unusually high when compared to other Temples. Though Sarabeswarar has a separate Shrines of His own He is also seen in the Sanctum in the form of a Metal Idol. Sarabeshwarar could be seen as a mixture of Human, Eagle and a Lion here. Panguni Brahmotsavam, Pradosham days draw huge number of Devotees. There are Shrines for Lingothbhavar, Dhakshinamurthy, Brahma and Mother Durga. It is presumed that Sarabeswarar is supposed to have the combined powers of Shiva, Vishnu, Prathyangara Devi and Mother Durga. Bathing in the Saraba Theertham is considered Holy.
