When André De Shields first moved to New York City, his first job was as a cat sitter: "I had a friend who was doing Jesus Christ Superstar who said to me, ‘You can couch surf in my apartment while I'm working, I have a cat. Take care of the cat, take care of the apartment, and you can stay until you get on your feet.’" That was the spring of 1973. By the fall, De Shields was cast in his first Broadway show. And now, the Tony winner is about the pace the Broadway boards again in Cats: The Jellicle Ball. You might call it a fur circle. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the "king, legend, icon, Broadway deity," sat down to share his life story.
