Migrants take serious risks to get into Europe

(28 May 2015) A group of migrants attempted to hide in trucks bound for Italy at Greece's Patras port on Thursday. Hundreds of migrants are willing to risk their safety to make it further into Europe. On Thursday, some of the migrants managed to find places to hide while others were deterred by police. Greece and Italy are the main points of entry into the European Union for refugees and economic migrants from the Middle East and Africa hoping to reach the more prosperous countries of the north. According to government estimates, some 37,500 immigrants and asylum seekers have reached Greece illegally so far this year. An abandoned textile factory in Patras has become the temporary home for dozens of migrants who are using Greece as their gateway to Europe. Some have already tried to leave for Italy and failed. After Italy, financially crippled Greece is the main destination for refugees. The country has asked for more assistance from EU authorities in coping with the flow.
