What better way to shrink your world than an 8-kilometer/5-mile flight? After searching for a Li-ion battery and a mountain line on Google Earth that would fit the bill, I packed my bags and made the long journey there. Before sending it, I had to walk 3 km/2 miles through the cactus field to get the best LOS for the lines I was looking at. I sent a test pack to see how the wind was and RX/TX. Surprisingly, my Video TX was very poor only a mile out. However, the signal was consistent, and I had already walked 3 km/2 miles through the snake pit without water and wasn't returning. This was one of the most nerve-racking flights of my life. As I approached the summit, my video feed dropped to 3-4mbps and was hanging on by a thread. If you go back and pause the video as I start the initial dive, you can see I was at 1mbps. On the way back, I lost the video twice due to losing LOS by mistake. After landing, my world instantly shrunk, and 3km became a fart in the wind; the feeling was incredible! After getting back and inspecting my SMA-U.FL adapter to the air unit was slightly bent, leaving me to believe this was the cause of my poor video. I’ve flown out past 3 miles since replacing the adapter with nominal Video TX operation. BTW, my Betaflight, the battery voltage warning was set to Lipo, not lithium-ion, from previous flights, hence the premature warnings; however, my heart was still pounding, trying to race back home across the desert floor under 3.2 V. I recently won $20 on a "long-range challenge" to fly 1.5 km/1 mile away at a meet-up.
