Artists Residence Herzliya | January-March 2019 Solo Exhibition by Liat Segal Curator: Ran Kasmy-Ilan In a world so overwhelmingly complex, we tend to make simplifications that enable us to view our lives as a series of logical steps and choices. As if the world was comprised of a clear set of causes and effects and of absolute truths, rather than a chaotic one. “Random Walk” is a mathematical process that describes random motion over time. In the center of the exhibition, stands a machine that makes this chaotic movement tangible with form. This installation, taking up the entire gallery space of the Herzliya Artists’ Residence, is comprised of three parts: cause, effect, and ripple. CAUSE | A coin tossing machine flips a coin time after time. A camera captures the results of the coin tosses, generating a series of random binary numbers (heads or tails). These numbers affect the following events. EFFECT | A large cone, made of 1165 elastic black tapes, is hanged in the air. Two mechanical belts pull the tip of the cone sideways and upwards, while a brass weight pulls it downwards. The cone’s motion is affected by the coin tossing machine. RIPPLE | Hundreds of half-full glasses are positioned on a large table. A concealed mechanism selectively moves the water inside specific glasses, creating a reflection of the adjacent moving cone. This movement is a secondary effect of the coin flips.
