Kevork Mourad was born in Qamishli in Syria. His Armenian family was one of many who relocated there. Showing great artistic promise since a young age, Mourad graduated from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia. The artist is currently based in New York, but his Syrian-Armeninan background remains the central focus of his practice. The beautiful old city of Aleppo, declared a World Heritage Site in 1986, now destroyed by the ongoing war, and the memories collected through his childhood, still greatly influence his works. Mourad often portrays fables, myths and historic moments connected to his roots and culture. He is a multi-faceted artist, taking in the mediums of painting and drawing and transposing them into live performances where he creates spontaneously, accompanied by live music. His multi-layered sculptural drawings and animation films sit between the motion and the standstill, reflecting upon the magic of storytelling. In 2016, Kevork Mourad won the Robert Bosch Stiftung film prize for International Cooperation with the short animation “Four Acts for Syria”. Mourad has performed at the Nara Museum in Japan, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Ismaili Centre in London, among many others.
