Hungarian composer Laszlo Gulyas was the founder of the Orchestra of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, a group that preserves and performs the traditional folk dances, costumes and music of Hungary. His compositions typically incorporate folk and dance tunes, such as the Csardas that begins tonight's work. Music from Szek is one of Gulyas' most well-known compositions, named after a small town in Transylvania, populated by mostly ethnic Hungarians who still wear traditional folk costumes. The piece is in 4 parts, connected by brilliant solo clarinet passages, ending in a vivace that goes as fast as our conductor can entice us to play! (Note by Patricia Matos-Puente MD) Performed at The Staller Center for the Arts on November 14, 2012 as part of The Stony Brook Wind Ensemble program on "CARNIVALS, HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS"
