Backpacking to Wall Lake in Utah’s Uinta Mountains was an unforgettable adventure with my family, and some friends. Wall Lake is one of the most popular destinations in the Uintas, thanks to its short approach, beautiful scenery, and abundance of campsites, and it’s the perfect place for both family camping and outdoor adventure. We set up camp about halfway around the lake, where we found a great spot right on the shoreline. Some of our friends day-hiked up and met us there, which worked out perfectly—they hung out with Zoey while my wife and I tried out a log raft that someone had built and left by the water. At first, it didn’t move very well, but after dragging it upwind along the shoreline and pushing it back out, we were able to drift across the lake in the breeze. It was definitely a fun little side adventure! The next day, I pulled out the gear I packed in—my snorkel, mask, and wetsuit—and did some exploring beneath the surface. The water was cold, but the wetsuit made it manageable, and snorkeling in such a high alpine lake was a totally unique experience. I was even able to spot a few fish! After that, I capped things off with some cliff jumping into the deep blue water. Since I was the only one with a wetsuit, I ended up being the only one crazy enough to jump in—but it was worth it! Overall, this Wall Lake backpacking trip was a great mix of family time, fun with friends, and some good old-fashioned outdoor adventure. Between the easy hike in, the lakeside campsites, and all the activities you can do, Wall Lake is an amazing spot in the Uintas whether you’re backpacking for a night or just heading up for the day.
