In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck the world and continues to have a severe impact on our lives in South Africa. The GALA Queer Archive, in collaboration with the Wits Centre for Diversity Studies, undertook a project called Relief on the Edge, which aimed to provide a space of reflection for queer community activists and civil society organisations who have responded to the needs of their communities during the pandemic. This film features a discussion between Jade Madingwane and Nosipho Vidima, activists from organisations and coalitions serving the needs of marginalised communities in South Africa. Anzio Jacobs, queer activist and director of an NGO called Scope Facilitation, facilitates and guides the conversation. The purpose of this film was to reflect on what it means to provide relief to black LBQ and sex worker communities in South Africa, and what can be done to strengthen this work moving forward. This project was funded by the Australian High Commission in Pretoria, and was filmed and edited by News From Home film production team.
