Marking Women’s History Month at Roosevelt House, please join us, in collaboration with Spectrum News NY1, for a special panel discussion on the career and legacy of New York Congresswoman and leader in the Women’s Rights Movement, Hunter alumna (’42) Bella Abzug. Examining her years of activism, service in Congress, leading role at the 1977 National Women’s Conference, and as President Jimmy Carter’s National Advisory Commission for Women, panelists explore Abzug’s enduring impact on New York and national politics. Inspired by a two-part podcast edition of “You Decide with Errol Louis” from Spectrum News NY1, this conversation is moderated by NY1 Political Anchor Errol Louis and feature Bella Abzug’s daughter Liz Abzug; lifelong friend and collaborator Letty Cottin Pogrebin; and Bella’s former press secretary Harold Holzer. They called her “Battling Bella,” and her signature line said it all: “This woman’s place is in the House—the House of Representatives.” From 1971 to 1977, Abzug, a lifelong New Yorker, served three terms in Congress, fighting relentlessly for women’s rights, peace, and human rights, and helping to lead the effort to impeach President Richard Nixon. In doing so, she kicked open the door for women in New York politics and made an indelible impression on her fellow New York politicians. Errol Louis, moderator, is the host of NY1’s “Inside City Hall,” the preeminent political news show in New York City, as well as Spectrum News’ national political discussion show “The Big Deal.” Previously, he served as a columnist and editorial board member at the Daily News and was a talk show host of WWRL radio. He has won numerous journalism prizes, and has taught at the Pratt Institute, Hunter College, Long Island University, and New York University. Liz Abzug is founder and president of the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (BALI), which is headquartered at Hunter College. She has served in a variety of roles in state and local government, including as Governor Mario Cuomo’s chief Washington lobbyist, Vice President of Operations of the Empire State Development Corporation, and as Deputy Commissioner of Operations of New York State’s Human Rights Enforcement agency. Harold Holzer has served since 2015 as the Jonathan F. Fanton Director of Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute. He served as press secretary to Bella Abzug in her final term in Congress and in her campaigns for the U.S. Senate in 1976 and Mayor of New York in 1977. He recently became Manhattan Borough Historian. Letty Cottin Pogrebin is a founding editor of Ms. magazine as well as a writer, public speaker, activist, and the author of twelve books. They include: Shanda: A Memoir of Shame and Secrecy; Deborah, Golda, and Me: Being Female and Jewish in America; and the novels Three Daughters and Single Jewish Male Seeking Soul Mate. A longtime friend of Bella Abzug’s, they co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus together. Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, March 19, 2026.
