I recently attended the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), which in addition to giving me the opportunity to hear President Donald J. Trump speak live for the first time, was an excellent opportunity for me to people-watch and make observations about the general state of conservative politics as it applies to social science and identity. Thus, today I discuss social identity theory in detail as well as optimal distinctiveness theory and uncertainty-identity theory to explain some of the things I observed at CPAC and provide some explanations for the current state of conservatism as a "movement", such as it could be described, in the US in general.
