I went through a major depression during the height of summer 2007, when I was quite literally forced but ready to admit thing I had never said out loud. “Tropical Depression” isn’t about the weather. It’s about the kind of heartbreak that was summer on outside… and a storm inside. I wrote this while reflecting on that season where I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep, and couldn’t understand how something that started in sunshine could end without even a goodbye. It broke me. I worked for a local pool at the time, so it became my healer and is now become a metaphor. The ocean became a mirror. And somewhere between feelings of internally drowning and having to physically and mentally resurface, I realized the storm wasn’t just around me it was inside of me too. It was time so confess. This video captures that descent. Water as grief. Rain as release and being washed clean. Silence as truth. Every frame is about what it feels like to sit in the deep end of your own emotions and choosing to come back up. If you’ve ever smiled in public while sinking in privat, this one’s for you.
