Onboard cameras aboard the R/V Deep Stim III capture the final moments afloat of the massive ship as it sinks in the Gulf of Mexico. This video shows the intense and spectacular views these cameras recorded as the vessel succumbed to the ocean and sank to the seafloor. This ship was sunk intentionally to create marine habitat as well as a fishing and scuba diving location in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The project is a result of a tri-county partnership between Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Walton County, and Panama City beach. Other organizations including the Coastal Conservation Association Florida, Emerald Coast Reef Association, and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association also contributed toward the effort. The ship was properly prepared and cleaned to a condition making it ideal for marine habitat creation prior to the deployment. Within months the vessel will start to colonize with organisms such as corals and sponges. Multiple fish species will use the wreck for shelter and resources. Over time, the underwater world this sunken ship will give life to, will mimic the biological activity of nearby natural reef systems. This vessel resides in the Gulf, near Destin Florida, close to where the SS United States will be sunk to create an artificial reef.
