Traditionally, the CFTR protein has been associated with individuals who have cystic fibrosis. But did you know the CFTR protein also plays a key role in many important cells throughout the body including the duct cells of the pancreas? When not functioning properly, the CFTR protein fails to regulate the transport of chloride and bicarbonate ions across the cell membrane. While some severe genetic variants can result in Cystic Fibrosis, there are many mild to moderate variants that cannot be detected with additional pancreatitis-specific genetic testing. One element of Ariel's advanced tools uses a mechanistic model to better understand how these variants change function on a cellular level. By modeling how genetic variants are influenced by each other and affected by environmental factors like smoking, Ariel goes beyond genetics to help doctors better identify and treat patients with pancreatic diseases that are caused by many such combinations of factors.
