Very little is known about this goddess, but we set out to explore her world and try to contextualise her a little bit because honey was such an important part of ancient life and there were a lot of strange beliefs surrounding it. Our third deity of sustenance is a sweet, sticky mystery that gives us an opportunity to consider the magic of bees in the ancient landscape of Roman thought, life, and religion. *** This is the sixteenth in an ancient history series that explores Roman religion behind the veil of Greek mythology. Each episode focuses on a different indigenous Roman god. The episodes follow on from one another and are building a bigger picture for those who are along for the ride but they are designed also to stand alone, so feel free to dip in and out.
