Paris protest in support of Kurds in Syria

(19 Oct 2019) More than a thousand people marched in the centre of Paris on Saturday in support of the Kurds in Syria where fighting with Turkish forces rattled a US-brokered ceasefire. The demonstrators, mostly Kurds living in Paris, continued to lament their abandonment by the United States as they feared an intensification of the Turkish advance. They are calling on French President Emmanuel Macron to summon other European leaders of the international coalition to stop the Turkish movements and help protect the Kurds in Syria particularly as the current ceasefire elapses on Tuesday. One participant called the Turkish military a worse enemy than the Islamic State Group in that it has fighter jets and bombs. Another called on the French President to arms the Kurds in Syria so they could effectively take on the Turkish military. In Northern Syria, nearly two days into the five-day halt in fighting, the two sides were still trading fire around the key border town of Ras al-Ayn. There has also been no sign of a withdrawal of Kurdish-led forces from positions along the Syrian-Turkish border as called for under the agreement reached between Turkey and the United States.
