Eastern Meadowlarks and Western Meadowlarks have ranges like their names imply, however, the eastern overlaps much of the Western's range from Texas and into the southwest. The western ranges further into the northwest. Where their ranges overlap, a flock may have both species and they may interbreed. They look almost alike and the differences are subtle. Under many birding circumstances, without being able to take a picture for close inspection, many birders just report it as an Eastern Meadowlark. Two different ornithologists have said that mature male Western Meadowlarks have what looks like white lapels, but the best ID is determined by the calls. Their call is definitely different and most birders identify that way. © Pat O'Neil Birding Excursions • jpo6224@gmail.com Video Bird ID's Videos shot in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado
