Omran al Shingaly is a Yazidi student who recently returned to his hometown of Shingal, Iraq (also known as Sinjar) after three years spent living in a displaced persons camp. The Yazidis are a Kurdish-speaking ethno-religious group who are concentrated in Shingal and other parts of the Nineveh province. In 2014, ISIS massacred several thousand of them, forcing them to flee to parts of Iraq's Kurdish region. In 2015, Shingal was liberated, but many Yazidis still in live in camps. Shingal, like other parts of Nineveh, is disputed between Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. In this interview, Omran talks about who the Yazidis are, and his life as a recent returnee to Shingal. Photo: The holy Yazidi city of Lalish (courtesy of Zachary Balomenos)
