This is caused by the pond not having enough biological filtration. Basically not enough good bacteria. The most common reason this occurs is because there are too many fish in the pond. But decaying leaves will also lead to a spike in nutrient levels. The most viable solution to fixing green pond water is to increase the biological filtration/ good bacteria. The bacteria will grow on any wet surface so increasing the surfaces available in the pond will increase the numbers of bacteria. Rocks and pebbles give a pond a natural look but also increase surface area within the pond. However my favourite way to increase the biological filtration of a pond is to add a bog or wetland filter. A bog or wetland contains rocks, gravel and plants. The rocks and gravel house plenty of bacteria, while the plants will consume any remaining nutrients. The results are a crystal clear, maintenance free pond. Hopefully this video helps you out.
