Listen to the Voice Inside | Amelie Sun | TEDxAISG Youth

Ms Amelie Sun speaks about her decision to decline an offer to study International Development at the University of Oxford and withdraw from a Finance degree at Imperial College London to pursue Psychology at the London School of Economics. This decision is the essence of “Dare to Bend.” She was positioned at the confluence of two powerful, straight-line paths to societal impact and prestige: the altruistic, macro-level path of Development at Oxford, and the lucrative, influential path of Finance at Imperial. To bend away from this dual trajectory was to actively dismantle a compelling future that others could easily understand and celebrate. The pressure was multifaceted: the weight of her family’s hopes for security and status, the confusion of mentors who saw her turning down two great opportunities and her own internal conflict between what was expected and what felt authentically hers. She is our Early Years Counsellor, supporting our youngest learners at AISG. As registered psychotherapist, Ms. Sun holds 2 Master's degrees in Psychology. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her work with both children and adults, helping them navigate life's challenges and foster emotional well-being. Perhaps the most heartwarming endorsement of her work comes from her children, Noah and Luca. They often proudly announce to their friends, "Do you know that our school counsellor Ms. Sun is actually my mom?!" It always gives her a smile on the face, and she hopes this sense of proud of her kids can last as long as it needs to be.
