Filmed at the beginning of June 2023, this video showcases habitat enhancement work in the stretch of the River Crane that is fringed by Little Park and Pevensey Road Nature Reserve. This work is a necessary precursor to the eventual reintroduction of water voles in this reach. [Currently the only known colony of water voles in the Crane river system is located a little way downstream at Crane Park Island.] The video shows how deflectors are being used to modify the flow regime in what is an artificially straightened river channel. In time this will lead to the formation of features beneficial to river plants and animals such as meanders, riffles, pools, and sediment bars. Also, an old ridge and furrow system in a glade at Little Park has been reconnected to the river to provide (when wet) a refuge area for fish and water voles, plus additonal flood storage capacity. Other work along the river here has included the selective removal of vegetation along the banks - to reduce shading and increase light penetration to the woodland floor and river, something which benefits plants and insects. This is a collaboartive project, involving several funders (London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Environment Agency and Thames Water) and a range of delivery partners including local voluteering groups. The work has been led by London Borough of Richmond upon Thames but London Borough of Hounslow is also involved as the river forms the boundary between the two boroughs in this location.
