Lightweight ceramic body armor has become increasingly popular in recent years, but out on the Interwebs there are folks who say ceramic plate armor is good for only one bullet hit, then it's useless. So we posed the question to the Smyth Busters, Brownells Gun Techs™ Steve and Caleb: Can ceramic body armor take multiple hits? Or is it a "one-hit wonder"? Steve says there is some truth to the myth. Back in the early days of ceramic armor during the Vietnam War, a hit to your flak vest would result in... ceramic powder inside. But says Caleb, ceramic body armor has come a long way in the last 5 decades, and he has the proof: an RMA Armament Level IV ceramic plate that took ELEVEN hits of M80 7.62x51 NATO with NO bullets penetrating it. If somebody had been wearing this plate, they'd be pretty darned sore afterward - but still alive. So the myth is busted: modern ceramic body armor certainly CAN take multiple hits and stay intact! Don't believe that RMA Armament Level IV ceramic plate took 11 hits? Here's the video to prove it: • Fact Vs Fiction - RMA Body Armor vs Airpl... (For a little extra challenge, we dropped it 3,000 ft. out of an airplane before the test!)
