The Old Runcorn Bridge, officially known as the Silver Jubilee Bridge, is an iconic steel arch bridge spanning the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, linking the towns of Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire. Opened in 1961, it replaced the earlier Widnes–Runcorn Transporter Bridge and quickly became a vital transport route for the region. With its elegant single-arch design stretching 330 metres, it was once the longest of its kind in the world. Originally carrying two lanes of traffic, it was widened to four lanes in the 1970s, but traffic congestion eventually led to the construction of the Mersey Gateway Bridge in 2017. After being closed for extensive refurbishment, the Old Runcorn Bridge now serves as an important local route, valued for both its distinctive engineering and its role in the area’s history.
