Our guest for this question & answer session is Professor Camilla Knight. Whilst most researchers conclude that tennis parents are getting it wrong, as a former tennis player herself, & as a parent, Camilla’s focus has been on understanding the complexity of the situation that parents find themselves in. She has challenged what has been assumed about parental conduct when it’s considered out of context & looked instead more closely at the complex & variable environmental factors driving behaviour. Her work acknowledges the emotions & pressure that parents feel and has examined the intention & desire behind their behaviour choices. This has enabled her to offer advice on how to influence parents which is routed in research, but relevant in reality, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the psychosocial experiences of children in sport. Camilla starts by telling us about her own tennis journey and what led her to her current role for the charity, Greenhouse Sports. We discuss why tennis parenting is slightly different from other sports and what research she has done in this space. She then answers parents questions such as how to support your child when they lose a match; dealing with our own emotions court-side as parents; balancing fun with ambition; whether or not it is appropriate to attend your child's individual lessons; what over-involved in your child's tennis looks like; how support for your child changes as they get older; and the importance of your relationship with your child's coach. This episode is packed with oodles of practical advice based the research that Camilla has undertaken over many years, I hope you enjoy!
