Zapata Swamp is located within the Zapata Peninsula, both are National Park and Biosphere Reserve, on the southern coast of Cuba, also called Montemar Natural Park. The region was established as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2001. Zapata Peninsula has native fauna, natural pools, caves, colorful coral reefs, beaches, swamp and forests, with a marine border on the south, and several hotels. It is the birthplace of the Manjuarí a fossil fish. It is also the place where the manatee, turtles, crocodiles, parakeets and the Cuban parrots have their habitat, in a rainbow of colors. There is beautiful Playa Larga beach. Buena Caleta and Cave of Fishes are coves with crystal clear water surrounded by rugged rock, Salinas de Brito saltwater lagoon, Treasure Lagoon, and Hatiguanico River, bird-watching and fly-fishing. To the east of Playa Larga beach is a forested area where many birds native to Cuba can be spotted flitting through the trees. It is home to the brightly colored Cuban tocororo, the bee hummingbird the smallest bird species on the planet, the Cuban tody, the Cuban parrot, and the Cuban owl. To the west of Playa Larga beach is Zapata Swamp, where vast numbers of flamingos, pelicans and other migratory waterfowl rest and feed in its waters. To the south of Playa Larga beach are the bay waters with a wide variety of colorful fish that reside in the coral, and south of the bay scattered along the Caribbean Sea some sunken ships that are centuries-old, as yet undiscovered.
