(3 Jun 2008) HEADLINE: N.Y. smokers fuming about new tax --------------------------------------- CAPTION: The price of a pack of cigarettes leaps in New York, leaving the state with the highest cigarette taxes in the nation. The state hopes it's incentive to get people to stop smoking. (June 3) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] IT'S OFFICIALLY "NEW YORK QUITS SMOKING" DAY IN THE EMPIRE STATE....BUT YOU'D HARDLY KNOW IT JUDGING BY THE NUMBER OF SMOKERS OUT AND ABOUT ON THE STREETS OF NEW YORK CITY (NAT POP) BUT THE NEW YORK STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT HOPES SMOKERS WILL SOON HAVE A CHANGE OF HEART CONSIDERING THE NEW CIGARETTE TAX...AS OF TUESDAY CIGARETTES WILL COST SMOKERS AN ADDITIONAL DOLLAR TWENTY FIVE PER PACK....A PACK OF CIGARETTES COULD COST A SMOKER AS MUCH AS EIGHT TO NINE BUCKS, NEARLY THREE DOLLARS OF WHICH GOES STRAIGHT TO TAXES....(TOM KENNEDY) "it's pretty outrageous"...SMOKERS ARE FUMING ABOUT THE NEW CIGARETTE TAX (BILL MUNGAN) I just think it's ridiculous and if I choose to smoke i'm going to smoke you hiking the taxes is not going to change that (TOM KENNEDY) "will it stop people no it won't stop people from buying them" BUT HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY STUDIES PROVE OTHERWISE (DR. RICHARD F. DAINES) There's a relationship between cigarette prices and smoking, the higher the prices there's a reduction in smoking NEW YORKERS NOW PAY THE HIGHEST CIGARETTE TAXES IN THE NATIONS...AND HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE PROUD OF IT....AT A PRESS CONFERENCE TUESDAY THEY CALLED THE NEW TAX A VICTORY FOR THE HEALTH OF YORKERS (DR. RICHARD F. DAINES) "what this will do in the long run is drive a lot people to try to stop smoking" (STANDUP BONNY GHOSH) "with the new city tax a pack-a-day smoker may spend as much as much as three thousand dollars a year on their smoking habit....but the question is does that break the bank enough to force them to stop smoking?" (TAMEKA MCNEILL) probably not as much not as much (DONNA HOBBS) "if it goes up high off it will probably knock you off smoking and I'd probably quit" (BILL MUNGAN) "raising the price on this might cut down on my smoking but it's not going to eliminate it there's a mythical land across the river called new jersey and that's where i'm gonna get mine from" OBVIOUSLY THE TAX IS NOT WELCOME NEWS FOR SMOKERS....BUT IF IT FORCES ONE HAND TO PUT OUT THAT CIGARETTE....THAT'S A PROMISING SIGN FOR HEALTH OFFICIALS....BONNY GHOSH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
