I threw a dart at the world map… and it landed on Uruguay — a country I knew almost nothing about. I explored the capital, Montevideo, walked through the historic charm of Colonia del Sacramento, and relaxed on the stunning Punta del Este beach. But this country had even more surprises waiting for me, leading to this amazing Uruguay travel vlog. From sipping Yerba Maté with locals and devouring a traditional Chivito sandwich, to watching a vibrant Murga dance, this country taught me what calm, community, and quiet luxury really look like. I stood inside the legendary Estadio Centenario, birthplace of the first World Cup. I visited Casapueblo, the dreamlike clifftop villa turned art museum, and took in the flavors of Bodega Pizzorno, one of Uruguay’s most iconic family-run wineries. Uruguay may not be loud — but it's rich in soul, and it's one of the safest, most progressive, and most overlooked countries in Latin America. I started at Liceo Impulso in Montevideo, where I was invited to be a guest speaker to 650 students, all getting education for free from the Impulso Foundation. Then I took part in a Murga ceremony, organized by a group called “De Camuyo Coro Murgeno”. Murga is a traditional form of musical theater and street performance originating in Uruguay, especially during the Carnival season. You want to be part of a Murga Uruguaya, which is what I did! Then I went to Mercado del Puerto Montevideo for a discovery walk and to have lunch. When they heard I am from Canada, my new friends suggested I should have a “Chivito canadiense uruguayo”, which is their national dish, called the Chivito sandwich. However, my biggest shock was to see everyone and their dog drinking Yerba Mate. Yerba Mate is a traditional South American drink made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. It’s especially popular in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, where it’s often consumed daily—almost like coffee or tea in other parts of the world. Equally important when you visit Uruguay is to go to Colonia del Sacramento and Punta del Este. In Punta del este, you muse-see the Sea Lion Island (Isla de los Cobos), the largest sea lion island in the world. Also, you need to discover Casapueblo. Casapueblo is a spectacular, whitewashed "living sculpture" perched on Punta Ballena, about 13 km from Punta del Este, Uruguay. It was conceived and built by the renowned Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, beginning in 1958 using no architectural plans—built organically over 36 years into a cliff-hugging maze of curves, terraces, and domes inspired by both Santorini-style Mediterranean architecture and the nest of the Uruguayan hornero bird.
