UK-based startup SteamJet Space Systems is leading this innovation with its compact “TunaCan Thruster” — a device small enough to fit on a CubeSat, yet powerful enough to extend a satellite’s operational life by years. Using just 130 grams of water, the system heats it into steam and expels it to generate thrust — essentially acting like a “space kettle.” As the number of small satellites in orbit continues to surge, efficient propulsion is becoming critical. Satellites must be able to adjust their position, avoid collisions, and maintain orbit — especially in increasingly crowded low-Earth orbit.
