Towards the end of this video (consisting of five smaller ones merged) it gets dusk - the time that (Eurasian) Woodcocks usually start to feed. In snowy conditions they often feed during the day as well, as they need the energy their food provides to stay warm. Did you know there may be an estimated 35,000,000 woodcocks in Europe (post-breeding)? And over 3,500,000 of them are hunted each year (primarily in Italy and France)! With snowfall and ground frost the food supply (earthworms and other invertebrates they extract from the soil) becomes unreachable, and they move towards areas with little snowfall - often the (Dutch) coast. At these times several thousands, likely even more, are found in the Dutch dunes and anyone walking the dune areas (joggers, birders, dog walkers) may flush dozens of woodcocks in one morning. Landtong Rozenburg has proven to be one such place where dozens turn up in those wintery conditions, as these videos show.
