There are so many different ideas for gifts, but let's talk about what not to do this Christmas or any other occasion! Please do not purchase and gift an animal! Shelters are overcrowded every year as people surrender them. An estimated 2.7 million animals enter UK animal shelters each year. Of these, 1.2 million are cats, 664,000 are dogs, and 184,000 are other animals (fishes, small mammals, etc.) In March 2021, 3.2 million households had acquired a non-human animal, many as an impulse purchase and a way to cope with the pandemic lockdown. With people back at work, more animals are being surrendered. Of all the animals that enter UK animal shelters, only 11% are ever reunited with their human. There are two prospects for animals who aren't adopted. The first and least common are foster or rescue groups. The second is euthanasia, which is the most common ending for these animals.
